Open Burn Guidelines

Open Burn Period: March 30th to May 30th and Sept 15th to Oct 30th

The open burns allow residents to burn limbs, branches, and clippings from trees, bushes, etc., incident to property clean-up activities, provided that the following conditions are met:

*Residents in Unincorporated Utah County must also have a valid burn permit from the Utah County Fire Marshal. Download Permit 

Rules

  • Permit Required; A permit must be obtained electronically from the Utah Division of Air Quality.  Upon completion, the electronic permit is automatically sent to Santaquin City Officials; No phone call to the City Offices is required.  Your phone number on the permit is required.
  • Call the Burn Line at 801-374-BURN (2876) to list your info and location.
  • No Burning of household trash/garbage/tires/plastics/coated wire/petroleum products/oils and other such waste.
  • No Burning of leaf piles.
  • No Burning in hazardous areas that would threaten the forest, woods, shrubs, dry grasses, or near the water-shed of our Wildland-Urban Interface.
  • No Burning during periods of high winds, drought, posted fire restriction periods, or during Red-Flag warnings, etc.
  • No Burning within 50’ of buildings and structures.
  • No Burning that creates a hazard or a nuisance.
  • Make Sure to verify it is a GREEN burn day through a weather monitoring service such as http://air.utah.gov/.
  • Make Sure to only burn materials that are thoroughly dry and reasonably free of dirt.
  • Must-Have an adequate water supply on-site or other means to extinguish and/or contain the fire from spreading.
  • Must-Have an adequate fuel break at a distance of 10 feet radius from the fire, cleared of all combustibles.
  • Make Sure to notify your neighbors prior to burning and be considerate. Be aware of smoke drifting toward the nearby homes.
  • Make Sure that a Responsible Adult attends to the fire at all times who will remain until the fire has been extinguished.

Open / Agricultural Burn Pre-requisites

  • Before you burn -  Airshed 8 (Utah County) is required to have a clearing index of 500 or higher for burning conditions to be favorable and for Open Burning to be allowed. Check Burn/Clearing Index 

All fires must be completely extinguished before dusk with no smoldering fires or before leaving the fire area.

Santaquin City encourages disposing of yard waste without the use of fire as a preferred method.  Other means could include green waste dumps, compost, etc.
