Michael Romero - Declaration of Candidacy

Michael Romero

Michael Romero has declared he will be running for city council during the Santaquin City 2023 Municipal Election.

My name is Michael Romero and I am a candidate for Santaquin City Council, looking forward to bringing my wide range of community experience. My involvement has taught me that the public demands a lot from their elected officials. They expect their representative to listen to them, to study and understand their concerns, needs and issues. As a council member my commitment to the community is to be transparent, accessible and accountable to my constituents.

I have been married to my high school sweetheart Kathy Poulsen Romero, for 49 years.  We have four incredible adult children and five precious and wonderful grandchildren.

We have been residents of Santaquin for a little over two years. In 2020 after being retired for 8 months from 30 years in the insurance industry, my wife and I decided to downsize and move to a completely new place. When we found our home in Santaquin we immediately fell in love with the open space, the orchards, farms and beautiful mountains. But most importantly, we were impressed with the people and their sense of community pride.

From an early age there was a mentor in my life who impressed upon me the importance of community involvement and participation. I was taught to give back and make the community a better place than I found it. Throughout my adult life I have lived this advice. I have a broad range of experience working with diverse groups, organizations, different churches, local, county and state governments.

Currently I serve on the Santaquin Planning Commission and on different boards and charities in Utah. I work at C.S. Lewis Academy which is a charter elementary school in our community teaching Spanish-speaking students to learn to read and write in English. I’m vice-chair on the Murray Childrens Pantry Board which serves familes in need. I hope to expand the pantry’s service in our community.

Other experience in my past includes serving ten years on the Utah Transit Authority Board of Trustees and three years as chairperson of the Murray City Personnel Advisory Board.
