Santaquin City Flood Mitigation Project
Plans are underway and progress has started on many phases of our flood mitigation plan to help protect our citizens and their property on the east side of the city.
As an update to you, we would like to briefly touch on the projects that are on going and the progress we have made.
- Forest Service Re-seeding and Mulching Project
In April the Forest service took an aggressive approach to help alleviate some of the potential for future mud slides by re-seeding and straw mulching the most vulnerable areas on the mountain. They dropped by helicopter 7000 lbs of seed and over 600,000 tons of straw. This project has been completed and is looking to be very successful.
- Mike Carter Diversion Channel
If you notice up close to the base of the mountain directly above the Santaquin Ridge subdivision, the developer and owner of the property contracted to build a diversion channel that will direct the flow of any water or material away from the homes in that area and channel it towards a point that we can better manage the flows and disperse them away from any existing structures.
- Flood Fencing
One of the major phases of the project is to construct flood fencing that will knock down any flows and disperse the water evenly away from any structures. We have or will be diverting as many of the flows through these fences to help mitigate any further damage. Many local volunteers have helped to install the fences and we are about 75% completed on this project. We will be looking for further volunteer help to complete this project.
- Water Bars
One of our concerns is the amount of water that came out of Tributary 6 and flowed down existing dirt roads and made it into our subdivision. To help with this problem we will be constructing water bars at strategic locations on the road to help any flood water disperse and sheet flow prior to reaching the subdivision. This should minimize the amount of water that reaches the residents in that area.
- Diversion Structure
We are currently working on getting the appropriate easements and approvals from the forest service to rebuild the diversion structure (just east of Stringhams Hardware) that meet the requirements of the NRCS. This diversion should redirect any flows to the south away from the eastside subdivision which was heavily affected from the last slide. This diversion will direct the flows through our fencing project.
